Hey guys! I am enjoying all of your comments and I wanted to put my two cents in. I too was blown away by the trailer when i went to see Superman Tuesday night. Spider-Man 3 looks amazing, no pun intended (see: The Amazing Spider-Man) I want to add a bit more specualtion to the mix be warned though possible spoilers here...

When I got into spider-man was when they brought the series, done by the creators of x-men, to sat morning cartoons. The way the Venom storyline went on the show, and I think the most probable way it will go in the movie, is Jamesons son who is already an astronaut is returning from his mission to the moon where they picked up some samples of a mineral known as Prometheum-X for the Kingpin. The Kingpin part might not be in there but the sample most definitely will.
Anyways so as the shuttle is re-entering Earths atmosphere this sticky black goo which appears to be alive oozes from the rock and attacks both of the shuttles pilots, knocking them unconscious. Consequently the shuttle is above New York when this begins to happen and our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man sees all of these events as well as most of New York. (it's kind of hard to miss a space shuttle flying in between buildings even in New york.) So the shuttle ends up crashing into the George Washington bridge and Spidey goes out there to help rescue the pilots. After our heros job is done he returns home only to realize that he has what he thinks are chemicals from the shuttle crash all over his costume in the form of a black sticky substance. After he is asleep the ooze makes its way to Peter's bed and the next thing he knows he is dangling above New York unaware of where he is or how he got there, wearing a fancy new black costume.
I feel like this post is going on way too long so I'm going to end there but if there is enough response to this I can go more into detail about how Venom comes from all of this. Thanks for letting me rant!

Yes indeed! The trailer for Spiderman 3 during Superman returns leaves no doubt. The next 2 foes for Spiderman will be Sandman and Venom. So my apologies to those that I doubted about the black costume being just him in the dark. As I recall the black costume looked nothing like his original costume and was smooth instead of a black covering over his original costume. I have the old secret wars and have been collecting Spiderman comics for over 40 years so I guess its back to the old mags to see what I missed/ forgot about this costume. As a side, a close friend just got back from NY and he said they were filming Spiderman while he was there. So guess it is at least in production so now we just have to be patient for a year while they get it ready!

Wow, thank for the background information sherri. For a person who never read any of the Spiderman comic book, this information about the origin of the symbiote costume is very useful, I am sure it will enhance my viewing pleasure when the movie comes out. Thank you!

the symbiote costume came from " secret wars" back in the early eighties. peter parker thought into an alien machine and this black goo ball came out of it. it swarmed onto peter, and he brought it back to earth, where eventually reed richards had to use intense sound to get it off of him. it later escaped the fantastic four headquarters and found eddie brock, who hated peter. In the original comics by stan lee, peters costume WAS black and red, and the blue was just highlights of the material. eventually over the years the blue highlights took over the original black of the costume and the black became the highlights. I imagine that the costume in the new movie harkens back the to the very early years of spiderman. I have been collecting comics since 1976 and spidey now resides as a tattoo on my ankle, but the punisher will always be my fave. thanks, and i hope that we will all enjoy the new flick.
