Valkyrie Review

Valkyrie

Although I knew the history about Claus von Stauffenberg’s attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler, Valkyrie still managed to make my hands sweat and my heartbeat accelerate. Valkyrie succeeded in making the entire movie suspenseful even if you know how the story is going to end, and that is a huge accomplishment of this film. Thanks to the director Bryan Singer, the film kept the storyline straightforward and without any unnecessary sub-plots. As a result, the film is focused and never lost its pace.

Regardless how much you dislike Tom Cruise, you have to give him props for his performances in couple of his latest movies. First, his acting and dancing in Tropic Thunder, although his scenes were limited but they were hilarious. Now, in Valkyrie, he made Claus von Stauffenberg’s determination and boldness palpable. Bill Nighy also did a good job portraying General Friedrich Olbricht, who is at times meek and indecisive.

Personally, I think Valkyrie is an entertaining movie. Audience is engaged with the story and the characters from the beginning to end. However, it is not a must-see movie at the theater, so if you can hold your urge and wait, just watch it when it is out on DVD.
