2006 World Cup Closure

It’s a bit late, but I still like to write down my thoughts on this year’s World Cup.

My take on the final match is that Italy deserved to win. The penalty kick rewarded to France was bogus; there was no foul committed by the Italian defender. On the other hand, the goal from Italy’s corner kick is solid. So if the referee did not screw up, the score of the match by the end of second half would have been Italy 1 and France 0. Now, let talk about Zidane’s head-butt. In my opinion, Zidane should not have done that regardless what kind of verbal attacks were coming out from the Italian player. Being a great and veteran player as he is, he should have known better and he should have had countless experience with this kind of situation. The bottom line is the Italian player knew his temper and provoked him intentionally, and Zidane fell for the trick and probably costed France the cup.

One thing that I noticed in this World Cup more than any other World Cup in the past is the poor judgments from the referees. These mistakes from the referee have a severe negative impact on the game loved by so many fans. FIFA really need to do a better job on referee selection, and perhaps it is time to improve referee’s judgment by equipping them with some technological devices.

Anyway, in spite of these annoyances, World Cup is always fun and exciting to watch. For now, I have to say goodbye World Cup and see you again in South Africa 2010.
