sorry to bug you but i have another rather irrelevant question, i sent you an email a while ago but im not sure if you got it, i just made the jump into wordpress myself so i was wondering how you went about customizing your layout, any tutorials that were helpful etc. although i noticed you are a computer scientist so you might not have needed any tutorials, thanks for your help, and sorry for bugging you again

Hi Jay, no problem, you are not bugging me at all. I would love to help. As far as the e-mail, sorry I did not receive any e-mail from you, most likely it got marked as a spam by mistake.
When I first picked up WordPress, I was just like you, didn’t know anything about CSS, but I did know PHP. So, I read some tutorials about CSS. You can get a lot of useful links from Google, that’s how I did it. Then I purchased couple books related to CSS and web design, and I learn a lot from those books. Now, of course, most importantly is to put everything into practice. I used to browse around other blogs, and when I see certain elements of the design that I like, I would try to replicate it on my own blog. I think that helped me understand more about CSS. In short, read books and CSS tutorials online and practice on your own blog.
I hope my little sharing on my learning helps you a bit.

thanks so much George, I really appreciate the feedback. I’ll jump on that reading and hopefully come out with some newfound knowledge sooner rather than latter

Hi weisheng! Good to see you showing up here again. The link in your comment, is that your new blog? Anyway, how have you been all this time?

Not too bad, thanks for asking! How about you? I stopped blogging quite some time ago because it was getting too tedious for me. Yeah, that’s my new blog, it’s design focused once again but in the tumblelog format. That means I only post short form entries, I haven’t got the patience to post long entries anymore!
I haven’t really browsed my bookmarked blogs much since I stopped blogging either. I’ve only started reading a couple again since I started this new tumblelog. Thought I’d drop by and see how yours is doing, looks great! Hope all is well with you.

Nice! In the past, I always enjoyed your design-focused blog, so having you back blogging about design is a good thing, and I sure will enjoy reading your tumblelog.
Personally, I have not played with tumblr. How easy to setup? I see you have tumblr redirect to your own domain, how easy is that process? Can readers leave comment? I am very curious about tumblr.

Thanks! It was really easy to setup, I’m using a very basic modification of a theme provided by tumblr. It’s basically like Blogger for tumblelogs, but it’s not particularly feature rich at the moment. I’m not too bothered though since it allows me to post stuff quickly without too much hassle.
The redirect is an option provided by tumblr. It was initially a bit of a problem, but more on the side of my host than tumblr. Everything went smoothly after I got the DNS changes settled.
As I said, tumblr doesn’t have much features right now. Comments aren’t possible yet, and there’s some debate among tumbleloggers because they feel commenting should be left to blogs. Personally I would like a comments feature and the tumblr developers have indicated they are looking at their own unique solution for interaction. The developer’s blog hasn’t been updated in some time though, so I’m not sure where tumblr is going. Doesn’t bother me too much! You should give it a test run, tumblelogging is pretty fun! And doesn’t stress my brain too much! :)
